In May the orchards go white all at once and the whole flat country between Chazy and the lake smells like blossom. Jay Bird's Construction and Lawn Care LLC works that season through — mowing, string trimming along posts and foundations, tidying the beds, carrying off whatever the wind brings down. Then the year turns, the fields go grey, and the same trucks come back with plows to open driveways and clear the walks to the door. Lake weather makes both jobs unpredictable and both jobs necessary. What lasts is the look of a place kept even: grass held to a line in July, the drive cut wide and square in January.
