Canastota is a canal town on the edge of the black muck fields, flat ground where the wind comes off Oneida Lake with nothing at all in its way. JDH Property Maintenance LLC. handles both ends of the year — mowing, trimming and cleanups from the first green through leaf-fall, then plowing, shoveling and salting once the lake starts throwing snow inland. Out here drifting is the real winter work: a driveway can be open at midnight and closed by four, so it gets checked again. Summer is a simpler pleasure — a straight-cut lawn, edges tight to the sidewalk, every bit of it blown clean off the concrete. Canastota, Wampsville, Oneida and Chittenango all sit along the route.
