The streets of Canajoharie climb hard away from the river, and a few inches of snow turns those grades into the day's whole problem. Swezey Scape is out on them in the dark — driveways plowed down to blacktop, hill aprons cleared so nobody stalls at the bottom, steps and walks opened and salted before the village stirs. Working a slope means pushing uphill and stacking where the melt will not run back over the drive and freeze again by afternoon. When the first lights come on above the Mohawk, the drives are open and the day can start on time. Canajoharie, Nelliston and the roads out toward St. Johnsville are all covered.
