At Canaan Four Corners the roads run four ways out into farm country, and the houses set back along them hold more lawn than they appear to from the pavement. Country Caretaker keeps that ground: mowing through the season, trimming close where a mower cannot follow, edging walks and driveways, and gathering leaves in the weeks after the maples turn. October is the long month here, cleanups running until the first hard freeze puts an end to them. Come spring the rakes come out again and the yards get winter shaken off them. A tended place out in the country reads as care from the road, and that is the whole idea.
