Snow comes into Lovejoy overnight and quietly, and by five the whole street of doubles is one unbroken white with the alley mouths lost somewhere in it. schambers snowplowing goes out to meet it — plowing driveways and lots, opening walkways and steps down to the surface, salting the packed places that would otherwise turn to ice by afternoon. A city driveway squeezed between two houses gives no room to be careless, and doing that clean is the whole craft of it. Then the storm slides off toward Genesee Street and the east, and the route starts over from the top. The measure of a night like that is simple: everybody gets out on time.
