The lakeshore bends at Hamburg and the weather bends with it — Eighteen Mile Creek cutting down toward Erie, Route 5 running the water's edge, the snowbelt sitting square on the village most of the winter. Hamburg Lawn & Snow works both ends of that year. Summer means mowing, edging, trimming and cleanups on lots that run deep behind the houses; winter means plowing, shoveling and ice control on those same driveways, in the dark, in the wind. There is something steadying about knowing under snow the ground you knew under grass. Come the thaw the mower comes back out and the whole circuit begins again.
