A temenos is a plot set apart, and Brooklyn is full of them, walled back gardens behind Heights and Cobble Hill row houses, invisible from the street and quiet as a held breath. Our Temenos tends those enclosures: mowing the small lawns, edging, pruning and trimming, weeding, mulching, and the clean sweep of a spring and fall cleanup. Ivy arrives over the wall from next door and has opinions; somebody has to have opinions back. Late in the day the light drops in over the roofline and the whole place turns soft and green. That hour is what the work is for.
