July on Nostrand Avenue is loud and green: hoses out on the sidewalk, containers crowding the stoops, everything growing faster than anyone planned for. Natty Garden keeps that abundance in hand with mowing and edging, weeding and mulching the beds, pruning back whatever has overreached, and planting for the next stretch of the season. Brooklyn soil will grow nearly anything if somebody pays attention to it. Cleanups at the start and close of the year bookend the wild middle. What comes of it is a yard that feels generous rather than overrun.
