November in Southeast goes gray and stony — bare oaks, ledge outcrops showing through hillsides where the old iron country lies under everything. Landscaping, Masonry, Maintenance Inc. spends that month getting ready, because the first real snow in Brewster rarely announces itself politely. Then it is plow work: driveways pushed open, commercial lots cleared and stacked, walkways and entryways shoveled, de-icer on the stretches that refreeze by evening. Storms here can hang on the hills for a day and a half, so the route gets run more than once and the piles go where they won't be in the way of the next one. Nothing about it is glamorous, and every bit of it matters to somebody at six in the morning.
