Green comes late and leaves early at Brant Lake, so the growing weeks between are worked hard and appreciated. SFH Enterprises mows and trims the camps along the shore and the year-round places up the hill roads, cutting around ledge, root and boulder the way Adirondack lawns require. Mountain shade means one half of a yard dries by ten and the other stays wet till noon, which is simply how the mowing gets planned. In late September the hillsides turn and the cleanups begin: needles, leaves, branches off the drive, everything cleared before the lake goes gray and the town settles in. A tidy lawn against dark pines and open water is a small pleasure, and it's the one on offer here.
