The first real Boonville storm usually shows up in November, filling the old Black River Canal cut and the farm lanes on either side of it. Hale Excavation plows through that, opening driveways and yards wide enough for a truck to swing and a car to pass. The snow is carried and stacked with room left for the next dozen storms, because on the edge of Tug Hill there are always more coming. Walkways come clear down to their own surface, and the ice that forms underneath is treated. When a lane opens out clean and square at the road, the whole winter starts to feel manageable.
