In April, Sing Sing Creek runs loud and cold off the hills and out across Big Flats, and the ground on either side of it wakes up dark, soft and generous. That is when Andrews Family Landscapes starts moving again — raking winter out of the beds, hauling off what the wind left, laying fresh mulch, and putting the first cut of the year on grass that has been waiting since November. There is a particular satisfaction in the turn from wet brown to even green, and in the tidy border where a bed stops and the lawn begins. Through summer the rhythm settles into mowing, trimming and edging on a steady loop, week after week, yard after yard. Come autumn the work reverses itself and the leaves come off again, and the yard goes into the cold looking as though someone was paying attention.
