Snow finds the hills around Beaver Dams before it finds the valley: a squall comes across from the west, climbs the ridge, and by four in the morning a driveway is a foot deep. Chris' Contracting is out in it, plowing drives and lanes, clearing walkways down to the pavement, and salting the steep spots where a car would otherwise slide. The quiet is the part that stays with you — headlights, the blade, and a road nobody has touched yet. By the time the buses run toward Watkins Glen the drives are open and the mailboxes are visible again. In country this steep, getting out of your own driveway is the whole day.
