Late-day light in the Harlem Valley comes in low and gold along the rail trail, and it shows every line a mower leaves behind. Lawns-N-More cuts for that hour — stripes running straight, beds cleared, clippings blown off the walk before the dew sets. Spring and fall bring the heavier rounds: raking out beds, hauling leaves down from under the old maples, opening a yard back up after the thaw. Then the valley goes quiet and white, and the same trucks are out with plow and shovel, clearing drives and salting the icy patch at the end of a walkway. One place, two kinds of work, both of them judged by how the property looks when you pull in.
