In Alexandria Bay the river makes the decisions. Fog lifts off the St. Lawrence by mid-morning, the islands come back one at a time with Heart Island out there in the channel, and the lawns running down toward the water dry just in time to cut. St. Lawrence Landscaping works those short, bright river summers — mowing, trimming around the granite outcrops and pine roots that will not move for anybody, and cleanups that carry the season out. Grass grows fast between the rocks up here and quits early, so the weeks in between are worked hard and worked well. A clean edge above the shoreline, water glinting past it, is about as good as this work looks anywhere.
