Akron is built on stone — the pale limestone under the fields that once left here by the trainload, still showing in the village's old foundations and garden walls. Bergman Landscaping works the thin, quick-draining soil that sits on top of it, mowing and trimming through a Western New York summer that starts late and finishes green. When the lake turns cold the calendar flips: plow routes through the village and out along the escarpment roads, walks treated, driveway aprons opened before the school buses run. There is a particular satisfaction in a January morning where nothing about the driveway has to be thought about at all. The rest of the year, that same attention goes into a lawn cut even and trimmed close.
