By late October the cottonwoods along the Elko road let go all at once, and one good Spring Creek wind will move an entire yard's worth of leaves into a single corner of the fence for you. Yard shifters turns up for exactly that — leaf and debris cleanup, a final low cut, edges redefined, and the whole lot hauled off rather than piled behind the shed. The rest of the year runs on the ordinary rhythm: mowing on a set schedule, string trimming the awkward margins, keeping walks and drives swept after every pass. Wind and dust come with living at this elevation, and a yard that is tended regularly simply carries them better. When the thaw comes back around, the same trailer is in the driveway to shake winter out of the grass.
