Turf City

About Turf City

Late in the summer the monsoon stacks up over the Nopah Range west of Pahrump, the valley smells like wet dust for an hour, and then it is dry again and everything green wants attention. Turf City works the long straight streets on that schedule — mowing on the cool side of the day, edging the walks so the grass stops exactly where it means to, and staying ahead of the weeds that show up after every storm. Out here a lawn is a decision, held against Joshua trees and open desert, so it gets fed and trimmed and tidied rather than merely cut. The good part is the finish: the last pass ending square with the fence, the driveway blown clear before the truck rolls. Then the sun drops toward Death Valley and the yard keeps its color right to the final minute of light.
