By November the ponds out at Stillwater fill up, and dusk in Fallon sounds like geese passing over. Lawns are winding down by then, and there is real work in putting them to bed — a last low cut, leaves and clippings carried off, thatch loosened so the crown can breathe under frost. Earlier in the year those same yards get the steady treatment: weekly mowing, trimmed borders, edged walks, weed control and feeding that holds the color through the long dry middle of summer. Aeration and overseeding in the shoulder weeks give thin ground a chance before the heat swings back around. A lawn handed over tidy in the fall is a promise about April, and it is a promise worth keeping.
