Fallon is green because water was carried here — the Newlands canals run out across the Lahontan Valley and turn alfalfa and front lawns emerald in the middle of a sagebrush basin. Working with that inheritance is the whole job: cutting at a height that lets the blades shade their own roots through a July afternoon, feeding the turf so the color holds all the way into cantaloupe season, staying ahead of the weeds that push in from the field edges. Aeration and overseeding open the ground so what water there is goes down instead of running off. By evening the mown stripes turn blue-green in the low light and a yard reads cool from the sidewalk. Green out here is made, not found, and it is a fine thing to keep making it.
