First light in Johnson Lane arrives over the Pine Nut Mountains and crosses the sagebrush flats in one long sweep, and for about an hour everything is cool and still. Clark's Custom Lawn LLC starts there, mowing while the dew is still on and the valley heat has not yet stood up. Lots out here are wide and open, so a lawn is a green rectangle in a tan country — which means the edges have to be exact or the whole thing reads soft. Trimmer work along fence lines and gravel drives takes as long as the cutting, and it is worth it. By mid-morning the yard is done and the day belongs to somebody else.
