Tano Road runs its dirt lanes out through piñon and juniper north of Santa Fe, past adobe walls and arroyos that stay dry all year and then run brown for an hour after a storm. The French Gardener tends yards on that ground — mowing the watered grass, shaping hedges, drawing the border where lawn gives way to flagstone and rock, keeping the beds weeded through the growing months. Up at seven thousand feet the light is hard and clear and it shows every ragged edge, which is a decent argument for doing the work well. Spring can open an apricot into bloom and send a frost three days later; the yard goes on regardless. What lasts is a place that looks composed — trimmed, swept and quiet under all that sky.
