East of town the land climbs toward Glorieta and Apache Canyon, where piñon gives way to ponderosa and November nights turn serious in a hurry. Mountain Desert Maintenance works both sides of that line — the mountain edge and the dry country below it — keeping lawns cut, trimmed, edged and cleared. Late fall is the closing sequence: needles and leaves off the turf, one last low mowing, the yard left clean before the cold locks it down. Done right, a lawn comes out the far side of winter instead of merely surviving it. That is the aim every autumn.
