North of town the valleys open one after another — Tesuque, Pojoaque, Nambé — apple trees along the acequias, hay ground, and in late summer the smell of green chile roasting somewhere just out of sight. Leroy Montoya Landscaping keeps lawns and yards through that stretch of country in the long evenings, once the heat has let go. Grass is cut even, ditch banks and fence lines are trimmed back, the grass under the orchard trees is mowed clean, and the summer's clippings and fallen limbs go out with the truck. Valley yards grow harder than town yards because the water is right there, so keeping up with them is a matter of arriving on the day, every time. Dusk comes up the valley from the south and one more place is put in order before dark.
