On the northwest rim of town, where La Tierra's dirt roads run out into juniper and the sky takes up most of the view, an April evening comes with wind first and then a stillness that arrives all at once. Kokopelli Yard Care works those outlying yards and the streets below them — mowing what grass there is, trimming along drives and fence lines, pulling spring weeds from the gravel while the ground is still soft, and carrying off everything the winter blew in. Out here a yard is a small deliberate green thing held against an enormous landscape, and that contrast is exactly what makes it worth keeping crisp. The last pass usually goes down with the sun already behind the Jemez and the Sangre de Cristos holding the final light. Then the wind quits, and the yard just sits there looking right.
