Nothing in Santa Fe changes faster than the river bottom in April: the cottonwoods along the Santa Fe River leaf out all at once, that first electric green against brown banks and old adobe, and for a few weeks the water runs like it means it. Daniel's Landscaping and Construction is out at the hour when the river park is still empty and the air still has a bite in it. Lawns take their first real cut of the year, winter's dropped limbs and leaves are raked away, edges are recut along walks and drives where the frost heaved them, and the beds are opened for whatever is coming up. Spring in a high dry town is a short window, and what is done well in these weeks carries a yard all summer. By mid-morning the green is holding and the work has moved on down the block.
