Late in a June afternoon the lanes off Acequia Madre keep their coolness — mud walls throwing shade, water going somewhere in the ditch, apricot leaves flickering over the road. CJ'S Landscaping works these narrow east-side blocks, where a lawn may be no bigger than a rug and every inch of it is seen. The mowing goes in short deliberate passes, edges cut clean where grass meets adobe and flagstone, shrubs held back off the walkways so a portal stays a portal. Trimming close to old walls is a discipline of its own; nothing gets nicked, nothing gets scarred. What is left when the truck pulls away is a garden that looks like it simply grew that way.
