Every September the chamisa along Arroyo Chamiso goes off like a struck match — mile on mile of mustard-gold rabbitbrush, and the whole city carries the smell of it. Chamisa Landscaping is named for that plant and works the season it announces: fall cleanups, leaf and debris removal, the last mowings before the nights start dropping hard. Through the hot middle of the year it is mowing, edging and trimming on a regular turn, keeping lawns level while the sun does its worst. There is pride in a yard that still looks tended in October, when most of the high desert has gone the color of straw. That contrast is exactly the point.
