By the middle of October the chamisa has gone gold along Old Santa Fe Trail, and up on Museum Hill the noon light is so clear you can pick out single junipers on the far side of the arroyo. Cassidy's Landscaping keeps the yards up that way — mowing what is still green, cutting back the summer's growth, and carrying off the season's leaves and stems before the first hard freeze locks it all in place. Autumn work is really preparation: a lawn left shorn and clean going into the cold comes back faster in April. Shrubs are trimmed to their shape rather than to a box, so a yard still looks like it belongs to the piñon country around it. Then the wind turns, the far southern horizon goes blue, and the place is ready.
