The measure of an April yard in Santa Fe is what leaves it — tumbleweed stacked against a wall, cottonwood twigs, the paper and grit a week of spring wind pushes down the side streets off Cerrillos Road. Bert's Trash Services LLC starts before the corridor wakes, while the signals still blink yellow and the Sangre de Cristos are only an outline going pink. Lawns are mowed and edged, beds and gravel raked out, and then comes the part most skip: all of it loaded and gone, not stacked behind the shed for later. Empty is its own kind of finished. By the time the first traffic comes down Cerrillos, the yard is clear and the truck is two streets on.
