The Rio Ruidoso earned its name — in May you hear it before you see it, snowmelt coming down through town talking the whole way. The cabins along the water sit close under the pines and the streamside willows, so trimming here is measured: enough light for the porch, enough canopy to keep the river's cool. Pruning eases weight off the limbs leaning over decks and footbridges before runoff softens the banks beneath them. Removal is taken piece by piece when a leaning trunk starts to threaten the road or the water. After a storm walks the canyon, cleanup drags the wood out and leaves the bank clear again.
