Placitas sits where the Sandias taper into piñon and juniper hills, and at winter dusk you might see a band of wild horses moving slowly along a ridge, dark against a sky going lavender over the Jemez. It is country where the land sets the style, all rock, scrub, arroyos and wide views, and Back To Earth Landscaping takes that as its starting point. Yards here are shaped to nestle into the hillside rather than perch on top of it, with stone, gravel and plantings that look as though they rose out of the slope. A finished project seems less installed than uncovered, as if the earth had been handed back to itself. That is the name and the work, folded into a single idea.
