Up the road from the village, the old mission walls at Pecos National Historical Park stand in a sea of grass that has been growing there a very long time. Handy Javi's works the tamer version of that idea, keeping home lawns along the valley mowed even and cut sharp where the turf meets gravel and concrete. Late spring is the turning point here, when the ditches run, the cottonwoods leaf out, and yards go from brown to bright in about two weeks. The work is mowing, trimming, and clearing away what the cut leaves behind, done on a schedule so nothing gets ahead of itself. A tidy yard in a village this old feels like keeping faith with the place.
