Spring in southeastern New Mexico shows up as wind: dust off the flats, the Guadalupes low and blue on the southern horizon, and everything not tied down ending up in somebody's yard. Popcobs LLC opens the season by clearing all of it, raking tumbleweed, dead growth and winter litter off the grass before the first cut goes down. After that it is mowing on a regular round through the long Loving summer, with string trimming around fences, posts and building corners. Edges are squared up so the grass keeps its outline no matter how hard the afternoon blows. Under this much open sky, a neat green rectangle is a small victory worth taking seriously.
