At noon in high summer the La Plata bottomland is all glare and shade, cottonwood shadows lying across the grass sharp as cut paper. Yardscapes runs its mowing rounds through that heat, keeping lawns at an even height so they hold their color until evening finally cools them down. Edges get a pass of their own, a defined margin along sidewalks, curbs and gravel drives, while trimmer work takes the pockets where a mower cannot sit level. Leaves, clippings and windblown debris are cleared off rather than raked into a pile and forgotten by the fence. Where the La Plata runs down to meet the San Juan, a lawn that stays green and orderly is an accomplishment, and it gets treated like one.
