Summer dusk settles slowly over the La Plata valley, and the cottonwoods along the river hold the last warm light long after the mesas have gone violet. Feelin Froggy Landscaping and Ponds tends lawns through that long northwestern New Mexico season, mowing on a set rotation and holding a clean line where grass meets gravel and walk. Out here a green yard is something a person makes on purpose, so it is kept on purpose too: one even height across the whole lawn, corners trimmed by hand, clippings gathered instead of left to scatter on the evening breeze. Spring and fall bring the bigger cleanups, when winter's fallen limbs and drifted leaves come off the turf and the ground gets to breathe again. The frogs start up down by the water about the time the work wraps, and the yard looks like somebody has been paying attention all along.
