There is an hour before sunrise in La Cienega when the valley is cold and blue, stars still out over the mesa, and the only sound is a truck starting somewhere down the road. Three R Landscaping likes to be moving by then in high summer, cutting grass while it is still damp and the air is worth breathing. The routine is mowing, trimming, edging and clearing away what comes off — repeated often enough that the lawns never get away from anybody. By the time the sun clears the ridge and the day turns fierce, several yards along the valley have already been put right. The people who own them wake up to it, which is a fine way to be surprised.
