Jarales lies in the flat green part of the middle Rio Grande valley, where acequias still carry water past alfalfa fields and the bosque runs like a dark seam along the river. Chase Septic keeps lawns mowed and edged on that valley floor, where irrigated ground grows grass with real enthusiasm from spring straight through the monsoon. Trimming keeps ditch banks and fence lines from swallowing a yard, and cleanups carry off what comes down when the weather turns. The Manzanos stand along the east side of the valley and catch the last of the light, and a lawn finished at that hour looks about as good as a lawn can. Around Jarales and Belen the work is steady, unshowy and honestly satisfying.
