Spring in Farmington arrives sideways — warm one hour, blowing red dust the next, with Shiprock a small dark sail on the western horizon the whole while. The yard mows, edges and trims straight through it, because grass in the Four Corners does not wait for the weather to mind its manners. The bluffs above town go orange in late afternoon and a cut lawn beneath them looks twice as green as it did at noon. Cleanups are simply part of the bargain here: what blows in has to be carried back out. The finish is uncomplicated and satisfying — level turf, borders squared off, and nothing left behind but the smell of cut grass.
