Down in the Lower Valley the old orchard rows still throw shade over ground that has been coaxed rather than conquered. Adam's Eden Permaculture Design plans yards on that principle — soil built up, water pointed where it will do the most good, plantings set so they shelter one another. Lawn care sits inside the plan instead of on top of it: cut at a height that keeps roots cool, borders kept honest, clippings put back to work. There is a quiet delight in a Farmington yard that asks less of the hose each summer and gives more back. Come October the leaves fall exactly where somebody wanted them.
