The lake goes glass-flat at first light in Elephant Butte, before the wind lifts off the water and the day turns to hammered heat. That is the hour Lynn's Landscape prefers: mowers running while shade still holds along the north side of the house, the butte itself a dark shape past the coves. Grass here is a small, deliberate green in a country of mesquite, creosote and pale rock, so keeping it means cutting at the right height, trimming close around drives and boat trailers, and clearing drifted dust and dry litter out of the beds. Yards get edged, weeds pushed back from the gravel, and every trimming loaded onto the truck instead of raked toward the arroyo. By the time the boats are on the water the work is finished, and the yard looks cool from the road — which in a Sierra County July is its own kind of gift.
