Corrales still runs on water moving slowly through earthen ditches, with cottonwoods leaning over the acequias and horses dozing behind split-rail fences. Sunbelt Landscapes & Nursery grows and plants in this green ribbon beside the Rio Grande bosque, supplying nursery stock and doing landscaping and lawn work for the farms and adobes along Corrales Road. Spring arrives with the ditch water: the first flow down the acequia, orchards in blossom, empty beds waiting for something new. In a valley of alkaline soil and bright, dry heat, each new planting is set into the ground and tended until it belongs. At dusk, when the Sandias across the river flush watermelon pink, a fresh bed along the ditch catches the last of the light.
