About Judith Phillips' Design Oasis

In Chama, summer announces itself with a steam whistle: the narrow-gauge Cumbres & Toltec pulling out toward the pass, coal smoke trailing over the rooftops. Judith Phillips' Design Oasis offers garden design and lawn care in this valley nearly 7,900 feet above the sea, where the growing months are few and each one is precious. Winter snow comes deep and lingers, so a garden here must be imagined for the thaw: the muddy weeks of meltwater, then the sudden rush of green along the Rio Chama. Design is the thinking half of the work, choosing what belongs, placing it where it can thrive, keeping lawn and beds in balance with the mountains all around. The reward is a yard that seems to have risen out of the valley rather than been set down in it.
