Carnuel sits in the mouth of Tijeras Canyon where the old highway threads between the Sandias and the Manzanos, and the wind comes through that gap most days like it has somewhere to be. Yards here are carved out of juniper and rock, so grass that grows is grass somebody fought for. Keeping it takes regular mowing, trimming along walls, gravel edges and fence lines, and clearing out everything the canyon wind stacks into the corners. Spring is the busy hour — everything green at once, everything wanting a cut. A tidy yard set against the canyon slope is worth the climb up the driveway.
