By late October the irrigation ditches in Bosque Farms have gone dry and quiet, and low sun crosses the pastures with the Manzanos standing blue behind them. It is cleanup season — cottonwood leaves drifted against every fence line, the grass slowing, the yards ready to be put in order. The work turns to the last even mows of the year, trimming back the edges that got away over summer, and clearing the yard down to clean ground. Cold air makes it good work, and the results read plainly from the road. A yard raked out and cut level in that autumn light looks the way a valley place ought to look.
