Bosque Farms is laid out in pastures and ditch banks, horse fence after horse fence, with the cottonwood bosque closing off the west side toward the river. In winter the sandhill cranes drop into the stubble fields and call all afternoon while the yards rest under a thin, clear sun. Come spring the ditches run again and everything decides to grow at once, which is when the mowing starts in earnest. The work is even cuts across big open yards, trimming along fences, posts and gates, and clearing the ground so the grass fills in thick. A pasture-country yard cut straight, edges held tight, is a fine thing to drive past.
