Bernalillo grew up along the river where the Camino Real ran, with the old pueblo ground at Kuaua just north and cottonwoods holding the bank the whole way through town. Come evening the Sandia crest turns the color that gave it its name, and the yards on the east side catch that light last. Lawn care in this stretch of the valley means steady mowing through a long warm season, edges trimmed clean along walks and gravel, the yard left clear behind you. The grass is good here when it is worked — river dirt, plenty of sun, a season that opens early in spring and runs deep into October. A cut lawn under that evening color is worth standing still a minute for.
