Belen has never stopped listening to trains; they come through at all hours, and the valley learns that sound the way it learns wind in the bosque. Between the tracks and the Rio Grande the ground is old farm dirt, and grass takes to it well when somebody keeps after it. That is the job — mowing at a steady clip, running the trimmer along fences, posts and ditch banks, leaving the yard raked and clear. The Manzanos catch the first sun east of town, which is a fine thing to work under. A lawn cut straight and edged clean is a small, plain kind of order, and this valley has always appreciated that.
