In late summer the storms come up out of the Gila and stand over Arenas Valley all afternoon, and the arroyos run brown for an hour and then go quiet again. Everything answers that water — the grama grass, the weeds in the gravel, the lawn that suddenly wants cutting twice a week. This is lawn care measured in growing weeks rather than calendar ones: mow it even, trim the edges tight, rake the yard clean, carry the clippings away. When the sun returns and the valley steams, a finished lawn is the tidiest thing for miles. That is reason enough to make the trip out.
