For about two weeks every October the cottonwoods in the bosque along the Rio Grande turn a yellow so loud it changes the color of the light, and then they let go all at once. The rest of the year it is mowing, edging, trimming and bed cleanup on a steady rotation across the city. Those leaves are broad, and heavy once they are wet, and there is a genuine pleasure in watching a lawn come out clean underneath them. Grass that goes into the cold uncovered comes back stronger in spring.
